Janeu, also called the sacred tread, has three threads, each one of which, in turn, is made up of eight cotton yarns. The three threads are tied together at one place with seven granthis (knots). The knots are tied and purified by repeating Gayatri mantra. The Janeu hangs from the left shoulder, crosses the chest from left to right and hangs down up to right side of the waist. It enhances purity and gives long life and divine bliss.
